A Poem for the New Year

“Hurt people hurt people” that’s what we say

yet healing together seems so far away

In loving forgiveness, grace may be found

and the joy of connection exists all around

within and between us the walls we have made

may crumble and transform into paths that we pave

with grateful remembering- we know who we are

compassionate caregivers created from stars

We live only briefly and rather than fear

imagine how much we might love while we’re here

The past can’t be different but we can decide

to surrender our masks and reveal what we hide

so those in our orbit know all that we hold

our wounds and our weakness, our transcendent souls

Imagine what’s possible when we choose to repair

what’s broken inside us and this world that we share
